Are Your Grooming Standards Work-Ready?

If you want to make a good first impression, it’s important to look your best, especially when you’re interviewing for a new job. Potential employers don’t know you personally, so your appearance for that first interview will profoundly influence how they view your prospects as a prospective employee. To put your best foot forward, you need to have work-ready grooming habits.


Give your face a good scrub first thing in the morning to feel invigorated and ready to start the day. Since your face is the first thing that people see, it’s important to make sure that it is free of dirt and grime. Avoid using harsh cleansers on your skin, which can strip it of nourishing oils and disrupt its natural pH balance. Don’t apply any new skin products just before your interview; this can cause an adverse reaction (like a rash) and draw unwanted attention to your skin during your interview.


To look professional, your hair needs to be neat and clean. Keeping a regular appointment with your local barber will prevent your hair from getting too long and unkempt.

If you are interviewing for a position, you should refrain from dyeing your hair unnatural colors, like pink, blue or green. Once you are hired, you can check your employee handbook or ask your supervisor if non-traditional hair colors are allowed in your company’s dress code, but it’s best to keep your hair traditionally colored for your first impression.

Facial hair, including that in the nose and ears, must also be kept well groomed to prevent unsightly hairs. Beards should generally be kept no longer than one inch unless your workplace specifically allows for a longer length. Keep the cologne light if you’re going on an interview.


When you’re preparing for an interview, start your day fresh with a shower. Be sure to apply deodorant to your clean, dry skin to be most effective. You may even want to keep an extra deodorant at work once you start your new job to help you feel fresh throughout the day.


While you probably don’t need to wear a suit and tie for your interview, unless you’re interviewing for a management job, you do need to wear a crisp shirt that and a clean pair of slacks or a plain colored skirt or dress. Nothing above your knees or below your collarbone should be showing.

A pair of khakis and a polo shirt is an excellent option for an interview. Your pants and shirt should also be free of wrinkles, so take care of this before your interview. Your shoes should likewise be clean.


No one wants to be downwind of someone who doesn’t have good dental hygiene. While you may have your brushing routine down, you should also make sure that you are using floss to reduce tartar buildup. Don’t forget to scrub your tongue, which is often the source of foul breath. Avoid eating foods with garlic, onion or similar strong odors before your interview, as the smell could be off-putting to the person interviewing you.

When it comes to having work-ready grooming standards, you just need to follow a few simple steps. By using these guidelines, you’ll look and feel your best and be ready to get the job that you want.
